Interpretation of the song

“Welcome Home”

by Benjamin Cooper

It is really a rare and precious connection between me and this wonderful song. I’ve been to Hainan province to attend a winter holiday camp in 2023, and there, I met a photographer and he use a Nikon camera, I had a nice relationship with him and found my interest in photography. Then I started to search for information about filming and first heard this song cause it’s generally the brand music of Nikon cause it indicates a completely different spirit than other camera brands, in the Nikon MV, there is a photographer rushing into a tornado with a camera, this passion for connecting and explore the nature deeply impressed me and pushed me to love this song. I heard this song every day in Junior 3 and had plenty thoughts to it, and this is another reason for me to choose this song is that it has lot’s of interpretation areas with my thoughts beside I love this song. Because of this, I believe I will have a good performance while doing interpretations of this song.

Firstly, maybe the character in the song is letting go setbacks in his life. In simpler terms is like that if you cannot achieve something or had been frustrated by disasters in your life, don’t turn down, just accept it naturally. In the song, this situation is likened to “Sleep don't visit, so I choke on sun”(Line 1) at fir_st._This line suggests that the story here is like “Me”, A frustrated individual, cannot sleep because of the troubles, but he doesn’t mind, if cannot sleep at night, just looking forward to the rising sun, that’s it! A photographer blogger “Linksphotograph” in Bilibili said that: “Don’t force yourself to shoot down all of the moments, if you can’t record it all, than just not shoot it instead.” Yeah, we may just follow the natural, maybe the god doesn’t want you to see that right, don’t overthink or ashamed too much, and remember to look on the bright side. There is also a similar part, “Ships are launching from my chest, Some have names but most do not”(Line 8-9), these sentences turns “my” great expectations into ships in the bottles, and “names” on the ships means succeed expectations. Some ships have names, which means some dreams that really exists, but most of the ships don’t, which is like the dreams that fail or just disappear in real life. Just like the ships, some dreams succeed and some fail, I also faced hopes that didn’t work out in my studies. I used to work pretty hard in Junior 3 but get pretty low score. But just study the character in the song, he didn’t worry any more, just naturally and calmly accept the reality and let go all of the bad memories. Connecting both the expressions in the passage and my real-life experiences, I believe that the character has enough motivation and mood to let go his setbacks.

Secondly, there is possibility that “Home” is a sacred place for “Me” in the passage. It can isolate and block every danger that made “Me” feel bad, even mental ones such as nightmares, and because of this, “Home” in the poem is an ideal place represents kindness and the original intention of “Me”. In the poem, “Peel the scars from off my back, I don't need them anymore(Line 11-12) is pretty likely to support this. In the story of the poem, when the character arrived at home, he don’t need scars, which I inspired as a medium to protect himself, anymore. And in the reality, nowadays, there are many unfair things happen in society, such as aggressive conflicts or discrimination, but when we back to this sacred place, as “All my nightmares escaped my head Bar the door, please don't let them in(Line 15-16) in the poem, all of the chaotic things will fly away, and the original, purity character in your heart will naturally appear. For me, this sacred place is my writing book and my blog1, with some unpleasant competitive and some unhappy things in daily life, in these two places, I swear that I will have that purity heart like “Me” in the poem. As “Welcome home”(Line 7) and “I've come home”(Line 14) appear with an positive and praising melody, the song further has a sense telling us that “Home” is an ultimately sacred place for “Me” where the character can unleash a pure mind.

Thirdly, “You” in the passage may represent what you love. It may be a kind-hearted girl worldly, but I think it’s the ideal character image in your heart, and surely, that girl you love will always have part of those personalities. From the song, “You were never supposed to leave, Now my head's splitting at the seams” (Line 17-18) is pretty like a situation that “Me” dealing with love, but overall, it may want to show, your love is the ideal one in your heart, with all the noble qualities of true goodness and beauty. And the one with these is never leaving, when you come back to “Home” in your mind, it will appear again. The last sentence of this song “Here, beneath my lungs, I feel your thumbs press into my skin again” (Line 20) is seeming to support the scene as the character had come home and the ideal character “You” are back, the most real feeling, touch of the skin, is showing “You” are truly vivid. At the ideal “Home”, return of “You” are the greatest power to heal “Me”! In real life, I also thought about the buddy in my mind, and I created one similar to that via Chat Bot for having an ideal “soul”2, so I pretty understand and like things as this, and these experiences of me really make sense in the song. Therefore,“You” may not only represents the ideal person, but also brings real comfort and healing to the character, just as an ideal image at “My” ideal home; and finally, I hope you, dear reader, can find your “Love”, which is your ideal character just as “Me” in the song, at your ideal “Home”.

(I’m also trying my best on finding it :D)
